Do teenagers really want to talk about God and Faith?
Well, maybe – but it’s far more likely that they have other, more immediate Life issues that they would prefer to explore!
This is where Table Talk: Youth Talking wins hands-down. This is a fortnightly opportunity for youngsters aged between 10-14yrs to get together to express their opinions, ask questions and generally enjoy being ‘centre stage’ playing Table Talk. Here’s how it works:
Every Table Talk pack contains six big themes. Our young players gather at a table and choose one of the themes they are going to explore. Once the introduction card has been read, 16 question cards are placed on a table. These cards can be placed face down on the table, placed face up on the table, dealt to each player, placed face down as a deck on the table – there are no hard and fast rules regarding how our group wants to do this.
The game starts as someone picks up a question card and poses it to the group and this is where the fun starts. Although there are adults present to help and guide when necessary, the discussion is all about what our youngsters feel about the topic under scrutiny, how they view things and what they think or believe about the theme. Whilst faith and God are relevant to every topic in a pack, the main aim is just to let the talk flow freely with each participant being given the chance to let the group hear what they think.
At any point in the game someone at the table can pick up another card and read out that question.
Games normally last between 30 and 45 minutes, and people answer between 4 or 5 questions.
The time ends with a shared meal with each meeting’s menu being chosen by the youngsters themselves and cooked by the adults. Often, discussion might continue during this time and the food is always and appreciated!
